Nearly every piece of work includes the beloved symbol of the dove, representing Israel's yearning for peace. Additional symbols come from a diverse array of Jewish iconography, including Menorahs, Rabbis draped in Taleisim, Torah scrolls, Kiddush cups, and synagogues.
Each etching features a combination of dozens of elements. Nevertheless, when completed, it resembles a skillful symphony composed of a precise and sparkling fusion of design and color.
I spend sometimes weeks researching a story that I'm going to paint. It's only when I know the story very well that I begin to make sketches.
Mr. Ebgi's prints have been featured in the Washington Post, World of Art, Israel, The Miami Herald and Decor Magazine, as well as holiday cards published by UNICEF and Hallmark. His work has found its way into the hearts and homes of numerous collections.
Few are willing to work in such a complex medium as etching. It takes nearly three months to complete one plate and each print may use five, six, even seven plates. Then there is additional hand-coloring.
Mr. Ebgi has been called a visionary whose imagination combines warmth, sensitivity and light and gives the complexities of Jewish life a universal structure. If art possesses the power to bring smiles of joy to individuals and foster peace among nations, then Mr. Ebgi's artistic creations are undeniably contributors to this worthy cause.
One reason I'm able to have such intricate coloring in my etchings is a technique I found for applying up to twenty colors at once. But that's a secret.
